Foreign Movie Gem: ¡Átame! (1990)

Atame (The English title of the movie is “Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!”) is a film by the magnificent Spanish filmmaker, Pedro Almodóvar. The film stars a young Antonio Banderas.

Okay, so how can I paraphrase a synopsis for the Almodóvar virgins?  Let us begin with the Spanish Stallion, who is imprisoned in some sort of asylum, where he repays his debt to society by fixing locks.  Well, it just so happens that the administrator of the prison is a horny woman who the Spanish Stallion is fucking on the side.  Because of his manly talents, he is allowed to leave the penitentiary or whatever, early.

Back out into society, the Spanish Stallion desires to lead a “normal” life, which includes a house and a wife.  He sees on a magazine, the picture of a an actress.  This actress was formerly a porn star. This former porn star becomes the target of the convict’s obsession.

We get to know the porn star a little better.  It turns out, she is a sex maniac and a recovering heroin addict.  There is one magnificent scene where she is in the bath tub and she plays with an electric toy scuba diver.

Soon, the convict tracks the porn star down and kidnaps her.  He then ties up the porn star (hence the title.) He wants to force her into loving him.

This whole movie reminds me of that Marilyn Monroe movie Bus Stop (1956).  I think, if that movie had a sequel, this would be it.

Well, through out the movie, the convict and the porn star battle it out as she tries to escapes.

Suspense and hilarity ensues.

Also of note, the porn star is starring in a “mainstream” movie.  The director of that movie is a horny, dirty old man who just became a paraplegic and travels around a wheel chair.

Please don’t let the subtitles scare you away.

And interestingly enough, they have a whole wiki page dedicated to bride kidnapping in film. They have a pretty long list which includes Borat and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

And if you are wondering why you never saw this movie in America, it is because the MPAA gave it an NC-17 rating.
